Our Approach

Malaria is a widespread disease that has a devastating effect on individuals, communities and the economy. It is possible to combat malaria through effective interventions.

Implementation partners
On the one hand, organizations are needed that know how to carry out effective projects in malaria-endemic countries. Malaria No More! is working towards achieving exactly that with African organizations or Dutch (development aid) organizations who have extensive experience combating malaria. The Dutch organizations work closely with local African organizations, which range from the national government to (health) organizations at the district level through to local NGOs.

Fund-raising
On the other hand, money is needed to fund effective malaria interventions. As a fund-raising organization, Malaria No More! raises awareness among companies, private individuals, social organizations, service clubs, charities, funds, government institutions and the people of the Netherlands with its appeal to contribute to the fight against malaria. Every contribution - including yours - makes a difference and can save a life.

Allocation committee and selection criteria
In 2007, Malaria No More! contacted Dutch organizations that actively fight malaria. Malaria No More! also appointed an independent allocation committee (AC) that advises management on the submitted project proposals they should finance. The AC bases its advice on the guidelines and selection criteria that Malaria No More! has drawn up based on the recommendations of a group of malaria experts, the so-called expert group (EG). The EG also assists the board during its decision-making process and can give advice on malaria-specific issues. In 2007, six projects presented by Dutch organizations were selected during the first allocation round and supported with the available funds. In 2008, Malaria No More! announced a second allocation round for projects carried out in collaboration with local organizations. This resulted in the selection of four malaria interventions carried out by African organizations, each with a duration of 2-3 years and each starting in 2009. We are still looking for financial support for these four projects.

Integrated approach at the local level
Local communities play a key role in the projects that Malaria No More! supports. Malaria No More! believes that it is essential that implementing organizations show patience and respect for the local culture and traditions when collaborating with local organizations and that they adapt to the existing infrastructure. In the end, the local African population will have to continue tackling malaria on their own. But considering that a comprehensive integrated approach that enables the measures to be embedded in local behaviour is also needed, it is not only important to distribute impregnated life-saving mosquito nets, it is also important that the local community understand how to use them. Local health-care professionals (renaging from traditional medicine men to doctors and district health centres) must also understand the significance of making the right diagnosis in order to prevent overtreating malaria and prescribing the wrong drugs. The Plasmodium parasite is extremely adaptable, enabling it to develop a resistance against antimalaria drugs.
