Rectangular mosquito nets are a bad idea
Malaria No More! Netherlands (MNM) has been supporting the work of the Ameland-based Theo Kiewiet Foundation and the Pioneer Self Help Group Bulechia in the region of Shibinga (West Kenya) since January 2009. The very positive results that have been achieved so far can be ascribed to the participatory approach, which consists of actively involving the local population, local leaders and the local authorities in the project. This gives them joint responsibility.
The pioneer group is not discouraged by cultural barriers. When a number of village communities refused to sleep under rectangular mosquito nets because they associated them with graves, the pioneer group quickly solved the problem by ordering round mosquito nets instead.
Project visits with AirCares Flying Blue Airmiles
In October 2010, two members of MNM’s allocation committee, Pieter Sluis and Steven Smits, and Theo Kiewiet visited this project in Shibinga to see for themselves how the pioneer group deals with malaria. Theo travelled on to East Kenya to meet with a supplier of neem seeds, which he will use to treat the mosquitoes' breeding grounds, and Pieter and Steven flew to Cameroon to review the Fobang Foundation project that MNM is supporting. These trips are possible thanks to the Flying Blue Airmiles that were donated through the KLM AirCares programme. To date, frequent flyers have donated 3.5 million Flying Blue air miles to MNM that can be converted into free tickets. Absolutely fantastic! We don't know who the individual donors are, but we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who donated.
Sponsor campaigns carried out under the banner of Wilde Ganzen
As part of the collaboration with Wilde Ganzen, MNM approaches schools, and service and sports clubs with the request to run sponsor campaigns to raise funds for its project in Kenya. The most recent successful campaign took place on 28 August 2010 in the outdoor swimming pool Zwemlust, where the swimmers and the organizers, Lions Club OverHolland, raised €9,500.
MNM is still looking for schools and clubs that are interested in organizing a sponsor campaign – preferably this year – under the banner of Wilde Ganzen. If you’re not sure how you can contribute, MNM can help with creative ideas and can even provide an online classroom teaching package for primary schools.
