Arjan Erkel new director of Malaria No More! Netherlands
In April Arjan Erkel was appointed director of Malaria No More! Netherlands. He replaces Henk-Jan van Hees, who will continue to work with the foundation as advisor. The board is thrilled that Arjan Erkel has decided to contribute his invaluable experience to Malaria No More! Netherlands five years after his abduction in Dagestan where he was country manager for Médecins Sans Frontières. Chairman Fred Matser: "Arjan brings the valuable experience he gained through his work with Médecins Sans Frontières, GoedTV and Stop Kindermisbruik to our foundation." Arjan Erkel: "Malaria is among the diseases that cause the highest number of deaths in the world. But it's also a disease that can be conquered with a good policy and sufficient funding, and this is what I will be devoting myself to." Arjan will focus on increasing the awareness for malaria in the Netherlands so that he and the Malaria No More! team can pay an even bigger contribution to the prevention and treatment of the disease. Start collaboration with new partners
n January, Daniel Muyanja of AMREF Flying Doctors Uganda visited us in Loenen. Daniel Muyanja, project manager of the ‘Fighting malaria in Nakasongola’ project we're supporting, reported on the progress of the project. We also spoke openly about his practical experiences preventing and treating malaria in Nakasongola.
Wilfred Mbacham of the Fobang Foundation visited us in Loenen in February. This was an excellent opportunity to get acquainted and talk about malaria in Cameroon and the ‘MALCON Drive’ project we're supporting. Wilfred Mbacham and Pieter Sluis of Malaria No More! took advantage of the meeting to sign the project contract. In March, Steven Smits, field expert on our AllocationCommittee, travelled to West Kenya to see how the ’Fight against malaria in Shibinga project is doing. Steven was very impressed by what he saw. Our support enabled the project to start at the beginning of February. We are always looking for ways to fund the projects we select. Your contribution is, of course, very welcome. An evening out: ROC(k) Side Story in de Meervaart
On Wednesday 8 April 2009, students of ROC Dans Amsterdam will be performing ‘ROC(k) Side Story’ in Theater de Meervaart in Amsterdam. This performance is dedicated to David Greaves, director and teacher, who died in Ghana on 24 July 2008 of malaria. The evening’s proceeds will go to Malaria No More! Netherlands. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The performance starts at 8 p.m. and finishes at about 10 p.m. It will be followed by an after-party that lasts until midnight. The performance is sold out. Visitors will be able to meet people from Malaria No More! and enjoy a variety of dance styles ranging from modern dance, jazz and hip hop to tap dancing. Peter Hodes cycles on in the Tour d’Afrique At the beginning of January 2009, Peter Hodes from The Hague set off on a four-month Tour d’Afrique of 11,777 kilometres across 10 African countries from Cairo to Cape Town. After almost three months of cycling, Peter has lost 14 kilos and has had to conquer a number of challenges, such as hellishly hot stages through the desert and climbs up unpaved mountain roads full of dangerous potholes. His participation in the Tour d'Afrique is a sponsor campaign for the fight against malaria. Peter has cycled over 6,000 kilometres and collected €5,767. Peter's aim is to collect €11,777, €1 for every kilometre he cycles. You can help Peter reach his goal by sponsoring him and Malaria No More! by transferring the sum for the number of kilometres you wish to sponsor to 56.10.25.312 and stating Peter Hodes as the reason for the donation. You can also donate online. In a few weeks, World Malaria Day will be celebrating its second anniversary. Like last year, Malaria No More! Netherlands will show itself from its creative side. Keep an eye on the newspapers and the TV and hold an ear to the radio on 24 and 25 April. On World Malaria Day you can meet us in The Hague at Afrikadag organized by the Evert Vermeer Foundation. |
