2008 - December: Peter Hodes takes part in Tour d'Afrique

Three organizations to receive funding from Malaria No More!
Malaria No More! received 16 project proposals in response to its second special allocation round. Following careful consideration, we chose malaria interventions submitted by the Fobang Foundation, Development Works Theo Kiewiet and Cordaid Memisa. You can read more about these organizations and the supported projects on our website.
Considering that Malaria No More! had to disappoint a number of organizations and turn down good projects, we will not call for project proposals in a third allocation round, but choose among the already screened projects.
Malaria No More! will continue its efforts to find funding for these projects. Your contribution is, of course, very welcome.

Volunteers in the wintry spotlight

Malaria No More! can count on more and more assistance from volunteers who support the foundation by donating their services. We would like to explicitly mention two of these volunteers.
First, Leonie Schakel, who represented the foundation at Festival Mundial and then decided to offer secretarial services to the AllocationCommittee. She helped the AllocationCommittee prepare the second allocation round and wrote up the allocation meeting report. Her efforts enabled the AllocationCommittee to focus on the task at hand and select three outstanding projects.
Second, Julia Schipper, who now manages Malaria No More! on Hyves. She has given the group a new appearance that fits the foundation. She also publishes messages and films and has increased the number of members. Chapeau, Julia!
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Leonie and Julia for their free services. We would also like to express our appreciation for the efforts other volunteers have put into helping the foundation.

New donation possibilities
Since November 2008, Malaria No More! has been working with HetGoedeDoelSMS, which offers a really easy way to support the foundation: text ‘MALARIA AAN’ to 5757 and automatically donate €1.50 a month to Malaria No More! The amount is so small, you'll hardly notice you spent it, but at the end of a year, you will have enabled the foundation to provide three children with a mosquito net that will protect them against malaria for five years. If you want to stop donating to Malaria No More! all you have to do is text 'MALARIA UIT' to 5757. Do you have your mobile at hand? Pick it up, and text 'MALARIA AAN' to 5757!
With St. Nicholas just over and Christmas around the corner, you may not feel like spending time in overfull shops looking for presents. You don't have to. YouBeDo enables you to kill two mosquitoes with one stone: you can order presents online from your easy chair and donate to Malaria No More! at the same time at no additional cost. YouBeDo donates 10 per cent of the purchase value of each product to an associated charity. You can give children in Sub-Saharan Africa a malaria-free future by selecting Malaria No More! as beneficiary.

Peter Hodes takes part in Tour d’Afrique
At the beginning of January 2009, Peter Hodes from The Hague in the Netherlands will fly to Cairo from where he will set off to live one of his dreams: cycle the Tour d’Afrique. The Tour d'Afrique consists of cycling 11,777 kilometres from Cairo to Cape Town across 10 African countries in four months. An incredible feat and a unique experience. On 25 April 2009, World Malaria Day, his son Jan will join him in the last stage of the race and cycle with him from Windhoek in Namibia, to Cape Town in South Africa to cover a distance of 1,720 kilometres.
Peter would like to add a second challenge to this daunting feat: raise as much money as possible for the distribution of bed nets. We aim at raising €11,777 with this sponsor campaign, €1 per kilometre. It is up to you how many kilometres you want to support. For just €10, Malaria No More! can enable three children to sleep under a mosquito net.
Will you or your organization help Peter cycle the 11,777 kms to the finish line and protect as many children as possible against malaria?
It's really easy to donate - even online.

Merry Christmas and a Malaria-free 2009
The management of Malaria No More! can look back on an effective and productive second year during which awareness for malaria increased in the Netherlands and the foundation is now supporting nine malaria interventions. None of this would have been possible without the help of our donors and benefactors, to whom we are very grateful.
We wish you and the inhabitants of malaria-infected areas a very Merry Christmas and, above all, a malaria-free 2009!
