Novartis student contest 'Telling the Malaria Story'
Malaria No More, a non-governmental organization committed to ending malaria deaths in Africa, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, are co-sponsoring a contest, “World Briefing: Telling the Malaria Story,” to encourage graduate students to join the fight against malaria and write about how this generation can make progress.
Students are requested to write a blog post, in English, 500 words or less that focuses on the current malaria burden and ways in which the contestant’s generation can make progress in the fight. The contestants are also asked to include one sentence of 140 characters or less explaining why he/she should win the contest.
The contest runs from March 15 until June 1, 2010 and is open to graduate students of up to 35 years of age currently enrolled at an accredited university in the United States, Argentina, Ecuador, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Philippines or Venezuela. These can be medical students or, for example, students Journalism.
A jury will select three winners: one from USA, one from Europe and one from Latin-America. These three winners will travel with the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation team to a malaria endemic country in Africa in September, October or November 2010. This is an opportunity to meet officials from the Ministry of Health and National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and learn about current efforts underway to control malaria. They will also have the chance to travel to local clinics, meet physicians, healthcare workers, patients and leaders from the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation Malaria Initiatives team and Malaria No More.
