KLM Aircares cares about fighting malaria

In April, May and June 2010, KLM's AirCares programme will support the fight against malaria by promoting Malaria No More and one of its projects in Tanzania and enabling passengers to donate money or Flying Blue Miles.

The KLM AirCares programme comprises quarterly projects that change every three months and three ongoing projects – Doctor2Doctor, Close the Cap and Wings of Support. KLM generates as much publicity as it can for these projects using inflight promotional films, articles in KLM's magazines, and by publishing information on its corporate website. KLM AirCares also runs special campaigns, takes part in fund-raising activities, and often makes an initial contribution. KLM raises funds by enabling passengers to donate their Flying Blue Miles onboard and online to an account in the name of the beneficiary organization so it can order tickets from KLM free of charge.                             Fame-PhotoA-2010-03.gif

Karatu Malaria & Rural Health Pilot in Tanzania
KLM's AirCares project for April, May and June 2010 is FAME's Karatu Malaria & Rural Health Pilot project, an initiative supported by Malaria No More! Netherlands.
FAME, the Foundation for African Medicine and Education, was established to bring quality health care and medical expertise to Karatu, a remote area in North Tanzania where malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea-related diseases are the major cause of death among children under the age of five.
FAME built a policlinic in North Tanzania and designed a mobile clinic that enables people in remote areas to receive medical treatment – people for whom health care was virtually inaccessible. In this project, the mobile medical team not only focuses on preventing and treating malaria, but also on monitoring the overall health of children and pregnant women in the Karatu region.
