Malaria in education
There are a number of ways in which primary and secondary schools can discuss malaria with children. For example, one-on-one or in-class.
Class talk or profile essay
Students can delve into the subject on their own by choosing malaria as the subject of their class talk or profile essay.
Malaria No More! Netherlands's website contains information on the disease itself, as well as on the enormous impact it has on the lives of people in malaria-endemic areas, the that can be taken, measuresthe position of Malaria No More! Netherlands and how a Westerner can help fight malaria. The latter gets students thinking about how they can help fight this deadly disease.
The website also provides access to visual material (such as videos and photos), as well as to audio, leisure and promotional material that has been compiled on a separate page.
Students can use all of these materials to prepare their talk or write their essay on their own.
Talking about malaria in class
For primary schools, Malaria No More! Netherlands has compiled a teaching package for children aged 9 to 12. A special version provides teachers with a guide on how the teaching package can be woven into the normal lessons.
For secondary schools, the Per Jaar Beter teaching package has been developed in the Netherlands for students aged 12 to 15. Using the Millennium Development Goals included in the material and twelve themes, students can find out themselves what the status of the Millennium Development Goals is in four representative countries.
Malaria is the tenth theme and is part of Millennium Development Goal 6.
Note! Both teaching packages are in Dutch and tailored to the Dutch education system.
Taking action together
As part of a class talk, a profile essay, or the teaching package, your class - and the whole school - can help fight malaria by organizing a fundraising event or a sponsorship activity. Do not hesitate to contact us for materials and ideas.
